US Vice President Kamala Harris has confirmed her readiness to vie for the presidency of the Democratic Party in the 2024 elections after President Joe Biden, 81, pulled out of the race last month. In case of her being elected, she would be the first female to occupy the presidency of the United States of America.
Delivering her speech at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, Harris focused on her potential to bring the divided nation together and deal with the issues facing the country. “For the United States of America, for the red states and the blue states, for the black and the white, for the men and the women, for the Spanish your grandmother speaks, for all those whose story could only be written here, I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America,” she said to applause.
In her speech, the 59-year-old outlined her vision of the country’s future, vowing to rise above the divisions that have previously characterized the US. She also fired at her Republican counterpart, Donald Trump, urging the nation not to allow him back into the White House. Harris accused Trump of putting himself before the country, pointing to the turbulence of his first administration and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Harris also used the opportunity to thank Joe Biden for his leadership and character. Biden also expressed support to Harris and said she will be a source of inspiration to generations to come. During the impassionate speech, Harris dedicated a few words to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who left India for the United States to pursue her dream, and inspired Harris to do the same. She also honored her Jamaican father, Donald Jasper Harris, for teaching her how to approach life’s challenges with no fear.
