Billie Eilish Opens Up About Coming Out: ‘I Didn’t Realize People Didn’t Know’
In a recent interview with Variety, 21-year-old pop sensation Billie Eilish opened up further about her comments on her attraction to women, previously discussed in the magazine’s Power of Women issue last month.
When asked by Variety if she had intended to come out in the article, Eilish responded with, “No, I didn’t. But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
Reflecting on the publication of her words, Eilish expressed, “I saw the article and I was like, oh… I guess… I came out today! OK cool. But it’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know… but it’s cool that they know.” Nervously addressing the topic, she concluded with a resolute statement, “But… I am for the girls.”
In the Power of Women issue, Eilish had shared her genuine attraction to women, emphasizing deep connections with women in her life and expressing both admiration and intimidation by their beauty and presence. She also discussed feeling proud of her womanhood during an emotional acceptance speech at Variety’s Power of Women event, despite struggling with insecurities and past tendencies to distance herself from the stereotypical portrayal of women.
This year has marked significant achievements for Eilish, who, in addition to receiving accolades from Variety, garnered six Grammy nominations for the upcoming 2024 ceremony. Despite not releasing a studio album this year, she stands as one of the 12 most-nominated acts. Eilish is nominated in multiple categories, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Music Video for “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack. She also earned a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration on Labrinth’s track “Never Felt So Alone.”
The 66th annual Grammy Awards are set to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 4, 2023, adding another milestone to Eilish’s remarkable year.
