NFL Midseason Entertainment Rankings: Which Teams Provide the Most Excitement?
As the NFL season reaches its midpoint, it may not provide absolute certainty about the future of each team, but it does offer a reasonably clear glimpse of where every franchise currently stands. With Week 10 approaching, there’s still ample time for teams to alter their course and impact the playoff landscape. However, by this juncture, there is a sufficient body of work to draw some preliminary conclusions about the identity of each team.
While preferences for entertainment vary, some franchises have proven to be more captivating than others, consistently capturing the attention of observers and delivering enjoyable performances. Keeping this in mind, we present our entirely subjective ranking of all 32 NFL teams, from the most to the least entertaining.
Miami Dolphins
While a recent three-game scoring slump has somewhat dulled the shine, the Dolphins still claim the top spot. Mike McDaniel’s offensive unit averages nearly a full yard more per play (7.1) than the closest competitor, showcasing their explosive capabilities through both passing and rushing. Tyreek Hill’s exceptional performance puts him in contention to become the first wide receiver to win NFL MVP, as he inches closer to the elusive 2,000-yard receiving mark. Additionally, the return of star cornerback Jalen Ramsey adds intrigue to an already impressive defense. Miami’s next challenge is to prove their prowess against winning teams, but their innovative use of “cheat motion” has made them the trendsetters in the league.
Baltimore Ravens
Despite limited opportunities in the national spotlight, the Ravens are making a statement with their distinctive style of play. Lamar Jackson’s MVP-worthy performance extends beyond statistics, as he consistently dissects defenses in the intermediate and deep passing game. The offense, under Todd Monken’s guidance, has the potential to become even more potent in the second half of the season. On the defensive front, coordinator Mike Macdonald has brought out the best in key players, creating a dominant force that demands attention.
San Francisco 49ers
Despite a recent three-game losing streak, the 49ers remain in a favorable position, with many of their issues attributed to the absence of key players like offensive tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The ups and downs of the Brock Purdy experience are expected to level out, but the 49ers have already demonstrated their ability to dismantle aspiring contenders, as seen in their victory over the Cowboys. They currently rank second in yards per play (6.3), indicating their offensive potential.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have faced the burden of living up to last year’s Super Bowl standard, leading to constant comparisons and high expectations. Nevertheless, they continue to stand out as one of the league’s leaders in offensive aggressiveness. A.J. Brown’s spectacular plays, despite breaking his six-game streak of netting at least 125 yards, showcase his ability to produce some of this season’s most remarkable highlights.
Kansas City Chiefs
While this season has seen the Kansas City Chiefs fall short of the high standards set by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, it would be unwise to underestimate their potential for improvement. Despite a recent dip, Mahomes remains a remarkable talent capable of delivering exceptional highlights with a flick of his wrist. What’s unusual is that this time, the Chiefs’ defense is a source of excitement rather than concern.
Detroit Lions
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has masterminded a scheme that ranks second in the league, trailing only the Dolphins, in terms of yards per game (390.6). Rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs is quickly establishing himself as one of the NFL’s most dynamic newcomers, with 315 yards from scrimmage in the last two games. Additionally, the immediate impact of players like tight end Sam LaPorta and defensive back Brian Branch has been noteworthy. Nevertheless, it’s a challenge to place a team led by Jared Goff in the top tier.
Dallas Cowboys
Dan Quinn continues to work his magic by orchestrating a third-ranked defense with a penchant for swarming the opposition. However, the offense often struggles, especially in the red zone, leaving fans puzzled. CeeDee Lamb has stepped up with impressive performances since their game against San Francisco, making the most of his opportunities. As always, the regular season serves as an extended preseason for a franchise ultimately judged by its playoff performance.
Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati’s slow start, particularly when Joe Burrow was injured, is a factor in their lower ranking, as they currently stand 27th in yards per play. The team is also tied with the Raiders for the fewest pass plays of 20-plus yards. However, during their recent four-game winning streak, Burrow has been exceptional, completing nearly 76% of his passes and averaging 283.3 yards per game with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. The Bengals are on the rise once again.
Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen remains one of the NFL’s top performers, despite his league-leading nine interceptions. However, the offense often appears one-dimensional, with Allen shouldering a disproportionate share of the load. The challenge now falls on offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey to recapture the multifaceted approach that once made the Bills one of the league’s most versatile teams.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are still waiting for their passing attack to break into the league’s elite tier, with Trevor Lawrence not to blame for the struggles. On a positive note, their defense, tied for the league lead with 18 takeaways, shows promise. There’s something intriguing developing in Jacksonville, even if it hasn’t fully blossomed with style points.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks, known for their unconventional approach to football, consistently provide a high level of entertainment. Despite a recent slowdown, they offer plenty to enjoy, particularly with rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon emerging as a rising star.
Houston Texans
Surprisingly, the Texans offer a compelling watch this season, despite their lack of prime-time games and limited appearances outside the 1 p.m. time slot. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is on pace for an impressive debut season, aided by the innovative schemes of first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers would rank higher were it not for a finger injury that has affected Justin Herbert’s recent performances. Kellen Moore’s offensive scheme, particularly the rushing attack, has fallen short of expectations. However, there’s still time to correct course.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings, led by Joshua Dobbs in the wake of Kirk Cousins’ injury, face a challenging stretch. Despite the adversity, the team’s four-game win streak is a testament to the magic conjured by coach Kevin O’Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores. With All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson returning from injury, the passing game may receive a much-needed boost.
New Orleans Saints
Derek Carr’s integration into the Saints’ offense has encountered challenges, but Rashid Shaheed’s speedy performances have enlivened the team with his league-leading 19.3 yards per catch. In a division that has lacked excitement this season, New Orleans is positioned as a club with staying power.
Indianapolis Colts
Despite their lack of prime-time appearances and the absence of their first-round rookie quarterback, Anthony Richardson, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, the Indianapolis Colts have shown creative playcalling under first-year coach Shane Steichen. Their offense ranks seventh in scoring, averaging 25.8 points per game.
Washington Commanders
Sam Howell, the second-year quarterback, is far from boring, displaying moxie despite facing a relentless pass rush and embracing a quick passing game. However, the Commanders have traded away Montez Sweat and Chase Young, indicating their focus on development rather than this season’s performance.
Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons can be a frustrating watch, as their skill-position talent should yield better results. Inconsistent quarterback play and an inscrutable offensive plan have hindered their potential. Arthur Smith’s approach, which often sidelines explosive playmakers in favor of unconventional strategies, leaves room for improvement.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns’ strength lies in their defense, allowing the fewest yards per game (234.8) of any NFL team. Deshaun Watson’s return from a shoulder injury has provided a boost to the offense, but it still needs time to find its rhythm.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh has managed a 5-3 record despite being outgained in each of their first eight games, a testament to Mike Tomlin’s coaching. However, the viewing experience has been challenging, with offensive coordinator Matt Canada and quarterback Kenny Pickett facing scrutiny. A Week 9 win showcased potential for a turnaround.
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans have shown resilience in keeping games close, with the majority of their losses coming by a one-score deficit. Will Levis’ emergence adds excitement for the future as the team transitions from the Ryan Tannehill era.
Denver Broncos
Sean Payton has brought respectability to the Denver Broncos, breaking a 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs. While efficient, their ground-focused offense lacks dynamism, making it less thrilling to watch.
Los Angeles Rams
Puka Nacua’s early-season prominence briefly diverted attention from the fact that the Rams are in transition. The Rams need Matthew Stafford’s return from a thumb injury to maintain relevance.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have experienced a four-game skid after a promising 3-1 start. While Baker Mayfield may help them stay competitive in the NFC South, their defense is declining rapidly.
New York Jets
Aaron Rodgers’ arrival was expected to bring a football renaissance to New York. However, with Rodgers sidelined by a torn Achilles, the offense has struggled to match the dominant defense’s level of play. If Rodgers returns later in the season, the team’s ranking could improve.
Green Bay Packers
Despite having one of the NFL’s youngest rosters, the Green Bay Packers have been error-prone and lead the league in penalties. The Packers’ performance is underwhelming, and it remains uncertain if Jordan Love can be their quarterback of the future.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears, despite their struggles, were granted four prime-time games despite finishing with the worst record in 2022. Tyson Bagent’s story as an undrafted Division II rookie stepping in for Justin Fields is intriguing, but it also highlights the limitations of relying on an inexperienced quarterback.
New England Patriots
While there may be schadenfreude in watching Bill Belichick navigate one of the most challenging seasons in his Patriots tenure, the New England Patriots’ on-field product is unimpressive. They rank 31st in scoring and lack offensive building blocks beyond offensive lineman Mike Onwenu.
Las Vegas Raiders
The firing of Josh McDaniels might breathe new life into the Las Vegas Raiders, who have shown promise under interim coach Antonio Pierce. Fourth-round rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell, while workmanlike, may not bring excitement. The Raiders still have three exclusive broadcast windows left on their schedule.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals defied expectations with a competitive early-season run, including a shocking upset against the Cowboys. However, their offensive struggles, such as managing just 58 yards against the Browns, have dimmed their spark. Kyler Murray’s return provides hope and intrigue.
Carolina Panthers
C.J. Stroud’s impressive debut as a rookie signal-caller has forced the Carolina Panthers to simplify their offense for Bryce Young. The team’s offensive struggles, coupled with the reliance on 33-year-old Adam Thielen, make watching the Panthers less enjoyable.
New York Giants
The New York Giants, plagued by injuries and a league-worst average of 4.1 yards per play and 11.2 points per game, have been a disappointment. Despite these challenges, they still have two “Monday Night Football” slots on their schedule, leaving fans questioning the lack of flex rules implementation.
