Why did Guy Fieri change his name? Here’s the emotional reason
The renowned restaurateur and beloved TV personality, Guy Fieri, achieved fame through his entertaining Food Network shows and a chain of highly acclaimed restaurants nationwide. He’s affectionately referred to as the “Mayor of Flavortown,” a moniker that perfectly captures his exuberant personality and distinct style.
But the backstory behind his memorable name carries a deeper significance than one might imagine, tracing back several years. Guy Fieri was originally born as “Guy Ramsay Ferry” on January 22, 1968, in Ferndale, California, as per Biography.com. He retained the surname “Ferry” until 1995 when he married his wife, Lori, and reverted to his original family name, “Fieri.”
This name, “Fieri,” was the given family name of his grandfather, Giuseppe Fieri, who had altered it to “Ferry” upon immigrating to the United States from Italy, choosing an anglicized version of the name.
Guy and Lori have shared nearly three decades of matrimony and are proud parents to their sons, Ryder, 17, and Hunter, 27.
Guy’s rise to prominence began in 1996 when he opened his first restaurant, and his career took a meteoric trajectory when he clinched victory in the second season of The Next Food Network Star. He now anchors six shows on the network and, in May 2021, inked an unprecedented $80 million contract with the network for three years, making him the highest-paid chef in its history.
In a recent interview with People, Guy underscored the importance of prioritizing his family, who have frequently made appearances on his shows. He remarked, “Family is always the first priority. Most of my friends will [say] I haven’t changed. I think it’s because when I got into television, I’d already done what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a great dad.”
He and Lori also care for their nephew, Jules, the son of Guy’s late sister, Morgan, who tragically succumbed to melanoma in 2011.
Guy’s son, Hunter, who recently secured his own Food Network contract, shared his admiration, saying, “He’s always leading by example. Seeing how much he cares and how, even though he is so busy all the time, he focuses a lot of effort on doing fundraisers… it’s eye-opening to me.”
Guy emphasized his commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle to be present for his family, expressing, “I’ve changed my lifestyle in the last couple of years – what I eat, when I eat, how I eat. I don’t want to be one of those guys that burns up through the tunnel. I’m in better shape now than I was when I was 30. I don’t want to die young. I want to be around for my kids. I want to be around for Hunter and Ryder’s kids.”
He elaborated on his new habits, saying, “I don’t eat until noon. At first, I was worried it would make me sluggish, but my body learned the routine, and my energy increased.”
